TURNER — A seven-run fifth inning helped Leavitt break open a one-run game, leading them to a season-opening 9-1 baseball victory over Gardiner on Tuesday.
Noah Carpenter hit a two-run home run during the Hornets’ (1-0) big fifth. Leavitt catcher Luke Gladu added a solo home run in the sixth inning for Leavitt.
Colton Taylor pitched six scoreless innings for the Hornets, striking out seven and scattering five hits. Taylor also chipped in two hits, one them a double. Will Keach and Jace Negley each contributed a pair of hits.
Cam Madore tallied a double for the Tigers (0-1).
OXFORD HILLS 10, BRUNSWICK 0: Dylan Truman drove in four runs to lead the Vikings to a season-opening win over the Dragons in Norway.
Cameron Pulkkinen scored three runs, had two hits and drove in a run for Oxford Hills, while Nick Binette and Truman each hit a double.
Jimmy Cook hit a double for the Dragons.
FRYEBURG 7, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 0: Raiders starting pitcher Ethan Lord pitched six innings, allowing one hit, striking out 10 and walking five to earn the season-opening win over the Patriots in Gray.
Alex Allain doubled and tripled for Fryeburg (1-0). Noah Day also hit a triple, and Lord and Jordan Dutton each had a double.
Kaiden Chase doubled for Gray-New Gloucester (0-1). Isaac Ormberg and Seth Espling each contributed a single for the Patriots.
SOFTBALL
LEAVITT 10, GARDINER 2: A three-run second inning and four-run fourth inning propelled the Hornets to a season-opening win over the Tigers in Turner.
Abby Albert (1-0) pitched 3 2/3 innings for Leavitt (1-0) and Hailey Cyr pitched the other 3 1/3. They combined to limit Gardiner (0-1) to four hits.
Sam Deblois hit a home run, and Kylee Spugnardi and Hailey Turcotte tripled for the Hornets. Abby Albert had a double.
Brynnlea Chaisson hit two singles for the Tigers.
OXFORD HILLS 11, BRUNSWICK 1: The Vikings scored nine runs in the first inning on their way to a season-opening win over the Dragons in Norway.
Starting pitcher Kyeria Morse struck out eight and earned the win for Oxford Hills.
Maddy Miller tripled and Samantha McPhail and Cameron Mayhan each had a double for the Vikings. Mayhan and Tristen Derenburger finished with two hits apiece.
Caitlin Seitz and Alana Wakinekona had a hit for Brunswick.
BOYS LACROSSE
MARANACOOK/WINTHROP 12, MT. BLUE 11: Owen Lyons scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the Hawks (1-0) won their season opener in Readfield.
Lyons finished with five goals and five assists, while teammates Jacob Lyons and Ethan Chilton netted three goals apiece. Goalie Easton Howard made six saves.
Chase Ranger scored four goals for Mt. Blue (0-1), while Trey Bailey and Cam Ranger each had a hat trick. Brody Farmer stopped eight shots in goal.
GIRLS LACROSSE
MT. BLUE 8, LINCOLN 7: Alaya Smith and Lily Huntley each scored two goals for the Cougars, leading them to a season-opening victory over the Eagles in Readfield
Alissa Butterfield, Chloe Roberts and Maya Kellett each scored a goal and had an assist for Mt. Blue (1-0).
Celia Brinkler scored a game-high four goals for Lincoln Academy (0-1).
Evie Hutchins logged a 68% save rate for the Cougars, while Ciara Stokes was saved at a 57% clip for the Eagles.
WINDHAM 20, OXFORD HILLS 6: Abby Trainor scored seven goals and Grace Joly added six, powering the Eagles (2-0) over the Vikings (1-1) in Windham.
Neve Ledbetter added two goals and an assist, and Marlie Ennis scored twice for Windham. Emma Ammons, Mady Donnelly and Lauren Jordan each had one goal.
Gracie Hart led Oxford Hills with three goals. Mallory Kennaugh, Ellie Winslow and Sage Winslow scored one goal apiece.
