CAPE ELIZABETH — Poland triggered the new 15-run, three-inning mercy rule in its 18-3 season-opening softball victory over Cape Elizabeth on Thursday.
The Knights (1-0) scored eight runs in the first inning, four in the second and six in the third.
Nicole Rioux hit a home run and a double and drove in four runs for Poland. She also scored three runs, as did Olivia Rioux, Phoebe Paradis and Emma Martin. Paradis also drove in five runs, including three on a bases-clearing triple in the first inning.
Khloe O’Leary pitched all three innings for the Knights and struck out three batters while allowing four hits.
OXFORD HILLS 9, BREWER 5: Sam McPhail finished a triple short of the cycle as the Vikings (2-0) batted past the Witches (0-1) in Brewer.
Kyeria Morse and Maddy Miller hit triples for Oxford Hills, with Miller adding two singles and Morse hitting one of her own. Morse also earned the win in the circle, striking out 13 batters while scattering three hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings.
Emma Jameson homered for Brewer, Madi Shaw hit a double among her two hits and Jill Ford tallied two singles.
GIRLS LACROSSE
NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 12, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER/POLAND 2: Lyla Casey led the Panthers (2-1) with five goals in their victory over the 26ers (0-1) in Gray.
Poppy Griffin added three goals. Nizzie Hemphill, Sadie Swenson, Gwen Curran and Henley Nadeau were the other NYA goal scorers, and Panthers goalie Salin Bachor stopped two shots.
Laney Farrar and Christy Mason scored for the 26ers. Lilah Thompson made 14 saves.
