Claire Louise (Milton) Sullivan

AUBURN – Claire Louise (Milton) Sullivan of Auburn, 93, passed away Jan. 28, 2024 after a short illness. Her beloved husband of 69 years, John, was by her side. Claire was born in Lewiston on March 6, 1930, the daughter of John W. Milton and Alice (Bradley) Milton.

Claire was a proud graduate of Morse High in Bath. At the 2023 Alumni reunion and was awarded the Morse High cane as the oldest Alumni.

Claire attended nursing school at Central Maine General Hospital, and became a Registered Nurse. She received a prestigious scholarship to Boston University and earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing. Claire returned to Maine to marry John and raise a family. She worked in the healthcare community as a Private Duty Nurse, Cardiac Care Nurse at CMHC, Head Nurse for Dr. Margaret Hannigan’s Practice and Director of Nursing for the early Androscoggin Home Health.

Claire was outgoing, friendly, and helpful maintaining a large circle of friends through her life. She had the ability to strike up a conversation with anyone and she regularly did. She loved to socialize.

She loved to dance. Claire and John were regulars on the dance floor and always impressed. She was an accomplished seamstress, showed talent as a painter and was always clever with her hands. She was a loving mother, wife, and caregiver.

Claire and John raised three boys, they spent summers camping throughout New England with a circle of friends and their children. The memories and friendships built during those summer trips lasted a lifetime.

Claire and John retired to Corkscrew Woodlands in Estero, Fla. and built a new circle of friendships that allowed them to stay active and engaged. Community dances, cookouts, trips, dinners, cruises, and side trips all benefited from Claire’s personality and good nature, she will be sorely missed.

Claire is survived by her husband, John; son, Michael and wife Susan, son, Robert and wife Michelle and son, Thomas and wife Paula; seven grandchildren, Maura (Matt) Maher, Joseph (Amy) Sullivan, Andrew Sullivan, Michael Sullivan, Lydia (Charles) Vanek, Ryan and Elizabeth Sullivan; five great-grandchildren, James, Ryan, Luke Maher, Ronan and Elliot Sullivan.

A celebration of Claire’s life will be held at The Fortin Group, 217 Turner St., Auburn, on Thursday, May 16, from 4 to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Church, 24 Sacred Heart Place, Auburn, at 11 a.m. Friday, May 17, followed by internment at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Lewiston.
