NEWRY — Newry will hold its town meeting on Tues. May 14 at 6 p.m. at the Bear River Grange, 71 Bear River Rd. in Newry.
On the warrant is a request for $259,000 for, “Sanitation to pay all fees and membership charges for Tri-Town Solid Waste.” Last year Newry budgeted $221,500 for tri-town trash but Bethel Town Manager Sharon Jackson recently announced an increase in fees from Casella Waste, the tri-town contractor. Hanover, Bethel and Newry share the use and the cost of the transfer station on Rte. 26 in Bethel.
The proposed budget which includes school and county tax is $6, 994,961 up from $6,150,360 in 2023. The difference is $844,601 or an 13.7% increase.
The budget includes $566,500 for a tax anticipation loan for road repairs. Town Administrator Loretta Powers said this money covers the gap until the Federal Emergency Management Agency sends funding to the Town. She said they have already taken $250,000 out of town surplus for emergency repairs from the December flood.
