DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Poland Historical Society announces a special event Saturday, June 15, at 10 a.m. at the schoolhouse next to the Poland Town Hall on Route 26.
The Lothrop Family, children of Harold and Viola Lothrop, will share their memories of Poland in the 1930s and 1940s. Poland had a population of 1,441 in 1940 and was a community of working farms, Grange halls, dirt roads and one-room schoolhouses. Bring your questions and your own memories of Poland back in the day. The event is free and refreshments will be served. — David, Auburn

DEAR SUN SPOTS: SeniorsPlus, Western Maine’s designated Area Agency on Aging, seeks volunteers to assist with a returning program, Opening Minds through Art, which strives to bring joy, art and pride to people living with dementia and Alzheimer’s in our community.
Weekly, for six weeks at our Lewiston office, people with dementia (the artists) are paired one-on-one with trained volunteers who help them create art using imagination instead of memory. SeniorsPlus seeks volunteers to work one-on-one with participants in these art classes. No art background required. Classes are on Fridays from 2-3 p.m. starting June 14 through July 19.
To volunteer, or to enroll a loved one as an artist, please contact SeniorsPlus at 795-4010, [email protected]. — Jessica, Lewiston
