100 Years Ago: 1924
Crowds of pleasure seekers are flocking daily (and nightly) to Lake Grove on the shores of beautiful Lake Auburn, which has just been opened to the public by Lester Davis, the sponsor, after spending several thousand dollars in making it one of the finest amusement centers of Maine.
“I plan to make Lake Grove the Cony Island of Maine within three years,” said Mr. Davis to the Journal! Tuesday. “It will be the mecca of the amusement loving public, a recreation spot on the shores of Lake Auburn for everyone, and, because I will not tolerate anything indecent, parents may bring their children without fear of embarrassment.”
50 Years Ago: 1974
An Auburn firm today was awarded the contract for the county’s oil supply for the next year.
The Androscoggin County Commission gave the contract to the Morrissette Oil Co. after the firm entered a sealed bid of .336 per gallon for heating oil, with a three cent a gallon discount to be allowed, reducing the price to .306 per gallon.
25 Years Ago: 1999
An early morning fire destroyed the Flower Barn building on Main Street in Livermore Falls leaving one person injured and two people homeless. Three cats and an iguana were missing.
About 70 firefighters from eight towns fought the fire that was reported by building occupant Arthur Castonguay at 2:45 a.m., Fire Chief Ken Jones said.
