LEWISTON — The Maine Mayhem brought their championship hopes to Lewiston High School’s Don Roux Field on Saturday. Unfortunately for the Mayhem, so did the Cincinnati Cougars.
The Portland-based Mayhem hosted the Women’s Football Alliance’s Division III National Conference Championship, but it was the visiting Cougars who jumped ahead and then held on for a 14-6 victory. The Cougars advance to the WFA Division III National Championship in Canton, Ohio, on July 27 against the American Conference champion New Mexico Banitas.
Chloe Brzycki’s 1-yard touchdown run off a handoff from Sabattus native Mahala Smith with just over three minutes left pulled the Mayhem within 14-6.
The Cougars held an 8-0 lead at halftime after blocking a Mayhem punt in the first quarter and converting on a long pass from quarterback Angela Mason for a touchdown with just over six minutes left in the second quarter. They stretched the lead to 14-0 on another Mason TD pass with just over five minutes left in the fourth quarter.
The Mayhem reached the National Conference Championship after winning their second straight Northeast region title with a victory over the New York Knockout on June 29.
