POLAND — A South Paris man was arrested Thursday night after leading police on a high-speed chase in a stolen truck from Norway, crashing it in Poland and fleeing on foot, according to the Norway Police Department.

Grover Harmon, 39, is charged with theft of a vehicle, as well as two outstanding arrest warrants, the Police Department wrote on its Facebook page. More charges are likely, the post said.

The drama began when Norway police responded around 5 p.m. to a report of a Dodge RAM pickup truck stolen from Lee Auto on Main Street in Norway by a man who took the keys and sped away.

Over the next 20 minutes, police received several sightings of the vehicle from police officers and civilians. The truck was driven to Oxford and Otisfield before it crashed into a pole on Johnson Hill Road near the intersection with Agassiz Lane, according to early reports.

The driver fled, prompting officers from Norway, Oxford and Mechanic Falls police departments and sheriff’s deputies from Androscoggin, Oxford and Cumberland counties to search the area.

A drone team from Norway Police went to the scene, along with the Maine Warden Service and a tracking dog from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

Paul Belanger, who lives on Johnson Hill Road, said he was cutting wood behind his house early Thursday night when a man emerged from the woods. He said he greeted the man briefly and the man responded to him before running toward Johnson Hill Road.

Harmon was captured about 6 p.m. on Johnson Hill Road where police were waiting.

Johnson Hill Road runs between Route 11 and Heath Road.
