DEAR SUN SPOTS: With heavy hearts, we will deconsecrate the East Stoneham Congregational Church on Route 5 in Stoneham. A final with a christening and deconsecration will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 4.

Following the services, there will be a luncheon at the North Waterford Congregational Church at 10 Irving Green Road just off Route 35. Everyone is welcome.

Also, we will have a bean supper at the North Waterford Congregational Church on Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 5-6:30 p.m. The menu is baked beans, American chop suey, cole slaw, salads, casseroles, brown bread, rolls, beverages and strawberry shortcake. The price is $12 for adults and $6 for children under 12. — Milly, North Waterford

ANSWER: For those readers who don’t know this, the deconsecrating of a church means to decommission it so that the building is no longer used for religious purposes in the future. This church congregation is always so faithful putting on these church suppers in North Waterford year after year. If you haven’t attended one yet, now’s the time to try it out.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I noticed you’ve been writing about different scams and phishing recently. For those of you who do a lot of online shopping and receive packages regularly, there’s a phishing scam out there that really looks like the USPS website saying they need to verify your address then they’re going to redeliver your package. They give you a tracking number and everything, but when you get to the bottom of the page, they want your credit card information to pay for what they call “redelivery.”

If you look at the website they want you to use, it has USPS in the website address, but it’s not the way it should look. I called USPS and they said there’s a lot of this going on so you must be careful. I didn’t put any information in or any credit card information because I was suspicious from the beginning, but the website looks real. USPS said customers have lost a lot of money because they did put their card information in. This message will come in as a text or an email. USPS said to report it to [email protected]. – No name, no town

ANSWER: I get those messages periodically and they do look official. Block and report.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: We are having a bumper crop of cucumbers this year and I don’t really have time to make pickles or relish. I’ve given some away and am looking for ideas to use them up. — Pat, no town

ANSWER: I make cucumber water by adding slices to my ice water. A sprig of mint added to the cucumber water is also delicious.

Have you ever made quick pickles? Store the cucumber slices in any kind of leftover pickle juice. Alternatively, stir together one cup water, 1/3 cup any type of vinegar, 2 tablespoons sugar, 1-2 teaspoons salt, and pour over 2 cups of sliced cucumbers, completely covering them. Add 1/2 cup of any type of diced or sliced onion, or other vegetables, if desired. Chill for at least a few hours.

Who has quick, easy cucumber recipes to share?
