100 Years Ago: 1924
Governor Percival P. Baxter in a statement today urges clean fairs in Maine.
“For four years I have visited many county and state fairs in every section of Maine, and as the Fair season now is opening, I urge those in charge of these exhibitions to eliminate all objectionable and sensational features,” continued Gov. Baxter.
“Most of our fairs are a credit to their management while others, apparently to obtain a revenue, allow things to be that have an demoralizing effect upon our people are to be regretted.”
50 Years Ago: 1974
A Lewiston resident has been appointed to the Auburn Police Department by Police Chief, Peter Mador.
The new patrolman is. Norman G. Vaillancourt, 27, of 5 Hogan ed Rd., Lewiston, who will begin his duties on Aug. 26, then on Sept. 3 he will undergo 10 weeks of recruit training at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy at Waterville, Mador said.
Vaillancourt, a 1964 graduate of Lewiston High School, is a Navy veteran, is currently enrolled under the University of Maine criminal justice program at Central Maine Vocational Technical Institute.

The United Society of Shakers at Sabbathday Lake opened their home and hearts to their special friends in the past couple of days in an annual reunion called Friends Weekend.
The Friends of the Shakers, a non-profit organization, was founded in 1974 to lend a hand to the unique religious community whose members had dwindled and needed help.
Today seven Shakers live at Sabbathday Lake: Sister Francis Carr, Brother Arnold Hadd, Brother Wayne Smith, Sister June Carpenter, Sister Marie Burgess, Brother Doug Anthony and Sister Minnie Green.
