Lewiston firefighters survey the damage Sunday after an early morning fire at 56 Knox St. Daryn Slover/Sun Journal

LEWISTON — Firefighters rushed early Sunday to Knox Street in Lewiston for reports of a building fire, officials said.

Capt. William Wallace of the Lewiston Fire Department said crews arrived at 56 Knox St. at about 2:55 a.m. after receiving reports of a fire on the rear exterior of a three-story, multifamily building.

The fire managed to climb the vinyl siding from the ground level to the third floor before crews extinguished the flames, Wallace said.

Firefighters returned to the address at about 8:30 a.m. after receiving reports that the fire had rekindled.

No one was injured in either incident, officials said.

The building sustained exterior damage, Wallace said, but remains livable.

Sabattus and Lisbon firefighters also assisted in extinguishing the rekindled fire.

The cause of the first fire remained under investigation later Sunday, Wallace said.
