KINGFIELD — At its Aug. 5 meeting, the Select Board addressed concerns from local business owner Gary Chemisis regarding multiple visits by an unnamed town official to his property, while also discussing plans to maintain and repaint crosswalks in town.
Gary and his wife, Valarie own Mountain Village Farm B&B and Silly Goose Bar N Grill. They shared their experiences with the board, noting the unexpected visits after opening their businesses.
“One thing we heard when we first bought the bed and breakfast was about when we were going to have Blues in the Barn,” Gary said. The couple took steps to work through the necessary committees and processes to get approval for their events and business expansions.
The Blues in the Barn summer concert series led to community interest in reopening the former Garage Bar. However, the Chemisises faced challenges, including repeated visits from a town official.
“We had one person show up three times,” Gary said. “They claimed to be on the Planning Board and told us we couldn’t park our RV where it was because it was an eyesore.”
The Chemisises investigated and found they were not violating any regulations. Despite this, concerns continued when the official commented on parking issues at the new bar. Gary explained that they had been working to improve parking arrangements, using a nearby field as overflow when needed.
“One evening, while I was opening the field for parking, the same town official said, ‘You have a real parking issue, and the selectmen are discussing it in their meetings,’” Gary recalled. “I thought we followed all the right procedures, but I am concerned.”
“I can tell you right now we haven’t discussed anything about your parking at this Select Board,” Select Board Chair Wade Browne clarified. “If we have an issue, we will contact you directly. Whoever is approaching you has no authority to speak on behalf of the board.”
Kim Jordan, another Select Board member, emphasized, “If a Planning Board or Select Board member shows up individually, they have no authority whatsoever. Any concerns would need to be discussed openly in a meeting.”
The Chemisises plan to raise the issue with the Planning Board.
In other business, the Select Board discussed crosswalk maintenance and painting. The town currently has 18 crosswalks, a significant increase from the previous five, which has put pressure on the budget. The board reviewed bids for the project, including a $12,650 offer from L&D Safety Marketing and an $8,000 bid from Nillo Sillanpaa, who offered a discount if the town provides flaggers.
The board decided to accept Sillanpaa’s bid, allocating funds from the town’s road maintenance budget.
Crosswalk and parking space painting is scheduled to begin soon, with a focus on areas near Main Street, Depot Street, the library, and the post office. Additionally, handicap spots at the town office and fire department will be refreshed.
The board unanimously approved the plan, aiming for completion before winter.
