Two thousand gallons of coal tar poured into the already polluted Androscoggin River in Lewiston last night, when two youngsters opened the valve of a Northern Utilities Inc. storage tank, and a major clean-up operation was under way today.

At least 2,000 gallons, and possibly more, of the black, sticky liquid was released into the waterway, authorities said.

Lewiston police apprehended two male juveniles shortly after the incident and are charging them with malicious mischief, and for pulling the four-inch valves that released the coal tar around 7 p.m.
