In connection with the New England Week, displays at B. Peck’s of locally manufactured goods is the attractive window given over to the Bates Street Shirt Co., Lewiston, whose shirts are known the world over.
50 Years Ago: 1974
Two thousand gallons of coal tar poured into the already polluted Androscoggin River in Lewiston last night, when two youngsters opened the valve of a Northern Utilities Inc. storage tank, and a major clean-up operation was under way today.
At least 2,000 gallons, and possibly more, of the black, sticky liquid was released into the waterway, authorities said.
Lewiston police apprehended two male juveniles shortly after the incident and are charging them with malicious mischief, and for pulling the four-inch valves that released the coal tar around 7 p.m.
25 Years Ago: 1999
The Auburn Recreation Department is sponsoring a Big Buck Club for area hunters.
The club member who harvests the biggest doe or buck will receive a trophy and a $25 gift certificate to their favorite sporting goods store. All registrants tagging a deer larger than 175 pounds will receive a Big Buck Club patch.
