WATERFORD — The Waterford Town Tree Lighting ceremony is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, in the Congregational Church on Plummer Hill Road.
Local first grade children plan to share what they love about the Christmas season in original, unedited recitation. Less than 30 minutes later, attendees can walk down to the green for the ceremonial lighting of the tree and communal singing of traditional Christmas carols. Music Director George Wiese is not only a performer and conductor, but also a collector of musical instruments, and organs, in particular. With a nod to past generations, he brings one of his foot pump organs to provide the accompaniment.
The tradition continues when the ceremony closes with “Silent Night,” as all in attendance are invited to walk back up the hill to the Wilkins Community House. Strains of a lilting harp played by Elizabeth Roth of Bear Mountain Music Hall welcome everyone back for a snack, a story for the children and a visit from Santa. Santa’s arrival follows Al Struck’s reading of “The Polar Express.” Each child is invited to choose a book to take home.
And the tree lighting is just the first of three events. Two memorable Christmas services are planned for 5:30 and 11 p.m. Christmas Eve at the church.
