Acting on information sent out by the fish and game authorities at Augusta the Lewiston police department was on the lookout Friday for a touring car with a large deer fastened to a running board. Information received from the State department Showed that the car passed through Winthrop at 9 o’clock Friday morning.
The deer being transported out of season may be one shot several weeks ago although the State department is inclined to think differently.
50 Years Ago: 1974
Auburn and Lewiston have officially been recognized as a Bi-Centennial Community. According to Mrs. Joan Lapointe of the Maine State American Revolution Bi-Centennial Commission. Approval of the community by the State Commission took place December 17 and approval at the national level is expected to take place in Washington, D.C., January 15.
25 Years Ago: 1999
Competitive Edge could pay $20,000 of a college education for those interested in a manufacturing, industry or technology-related field.
The Wal-Mart Competitive Edge Scholarship is set up to make sure that a student has all the resources needed to follow their dreams. It will pay $5,000 a year toward education for four years. Competitive Edge is designed to ensure that America’s best and brightest students become leaders in manufacturing, industry and technology-related fields. Since its founding in 1992, more than 1,400 students have received the scholarship. For the 2000-2001 school year, 250 more will be chosen at participating universities nationwide.
The first Competitive Edge graduating class entered the workforce in 1997. Many of these Competitive Edge scholars have already landed their dream jobs and begun to contribute to American industry at places like Microsoft and Lockheed Martin.
