AUBURN — The Auburn Public Library Chess Club plans to host a chess tournament from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, in the Conference Room of the library, 49 Spring St.
This will be the club’s first tournament, meant to be both a friendly and social competition. Players will be paired at random; ratings are not required and will not apply.
There will be approximately four rounds in single-elimination style. Prizes will be awarded to both the first- and second-place winners at the end of the tournament. First place will win a new chess set along with a $20 Hannaford gift card. Second place will win a $10 Hannaford gift card.
Registration is required to guarantee a spot; walk-ins are welcome only as space allows.
The club, which started last October, meets from 4-5:30 p.m. every Wednesday on the second floor of the library; all are welcome.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
