Think there’s much snow? Old timers declare there’s hardly been a flurry yet. Fifty years ago Lewiston “was boasting 11 foot drifts on the streets”, one Boston paper reports in its 50 years ago column.
50 Years Ago: 1975
The 35th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Laureat Comeau of Danville was celebrated recently at an open house given by their eleven children and their husbands and wives.
Mr. Comeau and the former Aline Auger were married on Jan. 15, 1940, at St. Louis Church and have always lived in this community.
Since his retirement, he has occupied himself by driving an Auburn school bus having formerly been owner and manager of the Pine Cone Ice Cream Co. at Fairfield, which has just been sold.
The couple attend Sacred Heart Church and Mr. Comeau is a member of the Richelieu Club.
Their children are Edward of Auburn, Mrs. Maurice (Jacqueline) Bussiere and Lucille Bourassa of Auburn, whose husband Robert is a member of the Auburn Police Department; Paul Comeau of Lewiston; Maurice, who, with his wife, Ann, is serving in the United States Army in California; Marc of Lewiston, twin brother of Maurice; Donald of Rangeley; Maggie, who lives at home, and Normand, Claudette and Ricky, who attend school and live at home.
Just members of the family and a few close friends were among the group of 75 attending the party, several having come from out of town.
25 Years Ago: 2000
As recently as the late 1800s, trains could move forward and backward in time as they crossed into different territories, and public officials often did not know when to end polling at elections. Regulated time only began to control our lives en masse within the past 100 years or so. Before that, time was not synchronized across the country, and certainly not across the world.
Geeta Patel, a professor of Women’s Studies at Wellesley College, spoke at Bates College to discuss how perceptions have changed through time, as well as how time has infiltrated people’s lives.
