RUMFORD — A local man was arrested on a slew of charges Friday after leading police on a vehicle chase in Rumford and then a foot chase in Paris.

Frederick Ryan, 46, of Norway was booked at the Oxford County Jail in Paris on charges of failure to stop, eluding police, driving to endanger, driving without a license and driving a defective vehicle.

Police said that about 10:40 a.m., Oxford County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to stop Ryan’s Ford Ranger for traffic violations on Route 2 in Rumford. Instead of stopping, police said, Ryan sped off and attempted to elude the deputies.

“After several miles the pursuit was terminated due to the aggressive operation of the Ford Ranger,” according to an Oxford County Sheriff’s Office news release. “Deputies and other law enforcement followed the vehicle as it traveled into Norway.”

A short time later, police were able to stop Ryan’s vehicle after they laid down a strip of spike mats on High Street in Paris, disabling the Ranger.

Once the truck came to a stop, police said, Ryan attempted to flee on foot. It was a short chase, police said, and Ryan was soon taken into custody.
