I want to express my appreciation to U.S. Sen. Susan Collins for her support and the successful passage of the Social Security Fairness Act.
The Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset unfairly targets our teachers, public safety workers and state employees. The restoration of full Social Security benefits is a win-win for hardworking Mainers who, in good faith, contributed to it, knowing that they will have the supplemental income when they retire.
Having met their requirements for Social Security — only to be penalized with a reduction of benefits — is simply unfair. Repealing the WEP & GPO was the right thing to do.
I thank Sen. Collins for continuing to fight for Maine workers and retirees.
