RaeAnne Richards is No. 1 in her class.

RaeAnne Richards of Paris.

The Paris businesswoman, who is the owner of Simply Soft Waxing Skincare Massage Reiki in Paris, brought home the top prize last weekend from The Skin Games, a waxing and skin care competition that bills itself as the top international event for beauty professionals.

Richards, 51, was named Waxer of the Year at the Atlanta competition, which featured more than two dozen beauty professionals. Richards, who brought her own model to the competition, also took first place in leg waxing and was runner-up in both Brazilian waxing and brow waxing.

For winning the title Waxer of the Year, Richards also earned $5,000 in prize money.

It was Richards’ first time competing in the international competition, being held for the 10th time. Next year’s competition will be held in Dallas.

Born and raised in Washington state, Richards started the business in her home state approximately 15 years ago. She brought the business with her when she moved to Maine four years ago.

How did you get involved with waxing and skin care?

I originally went to school for hair, but along the way I fell in love with aesthetics. Seeing how happy and confident people felt after a treatment really resonated with me, and I knew this was the right path. There’s something so rewarding about helping clients feel good in their own skin, and that’s what truly made me passionate about waxing and skin care!

How much schooling is required to learn this, or is it just learning by doing?

To obtain an esthetician license in Maine, you must complete a 600-hour training program at a licensed school, pass both the written and practical examinations, and submit an application to the Maine Barbering and Cosmetology Licensing Program.

What advice do you have for someone who wants to get into this profession?

Aesthetics is an amazing career for anyone passionate about helping people feel confident and beautiful in their own skin.
How often have you attended the national competition (Skin Games), and what was that experience like?

This was my first year attending the Skin Games, but I’ve been following the competition for years. I finally decided to step out of my comfort zone, shake things up, and challenge myself in a new way. The experience was incredible — being surrounded by so many talented professionals, pushing my skills to the next level, and immersing myself in an environment dedicated to excellence in skin care and waxing. It was both nerve wracking and exciting, but ultimately, it was an amazing opportunity for growth and learning.

How were people judged, and what did you do to separate yourself from the competition?

To stand out in the waxing competition, contestants must excel in key judging criteria, including professional waxing methods, precise application and removal techniques, speed, and accuracy. To separate myself from the competition, I focused on: ensuring smooth, clean wax application and removal with minimal discomfort for the client; efficiency and speed, attention to detail, client comfort, and hygiene; and I aimed to deliver results that stood out to the judges.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I love exploring local restaurants and shops — I’m a total foodie, so I’m always on the lookout for great eats and hidden gems in the community. Supporting small businesses is something I’m really passionate about. And I enjoy discovering new flavors and unique places. I also try to give back to my community whenever I can, whether it’s through volunteering or supporting local events. It’s all about good food, great people, and making a positive impact.
