PARIS — Police Chief Michael Ward and Town Manager Natalie Andrews will discuss changes to the Police Department at the Select Board meeting Monday at 6 p.m. at the Fire Station on Western Avenue.

Ward identified restructuring as a priority when he was named chief last September. While the number of officers remains at 11, positions for a captain and a corporal were added and a structured rank system implemented.

“Our goal is to have two officers on every day,” Ward said. The changes will increase officer safety and allow for quicker response times.

Areas of concern include dealing with more traffic issues and more drug trafficking.

The changes were made at previous Select Board meetings, but some residents are starting to realize their impact.

“There’s been some people in the town that feel that this hasn’t been as transparent as it should be,” Andrews said. “We’re going to have the PD do a presentation on Monday so they can explain more publicly what everyone’s job descriptions are and why we feel it is necessary.”

Andrews said the change will have little impact on the budget. What is having an impact, she said, last year contract negotiations led to wage increases.

She also stressed the importance of having an independent police department, instead of relying on the county or other agencies.

“Our local officers build relationships with residents and are deeply invested in our community,” Andrews said, stressing the importance of community policing.

In addition to enhance leadership, accountability and effectiveness, Ward said the restructuring will create a safer environment for community members, the business community and visitors to town.

“We just want to provide a good quality service and have some structure in the process,” he said.
