Auburn’s high school, “the Edward Little,” famous throughout New England, cannot hold its lead much longer in the present school building. This is the opinion of Superintendent George R. Gardner of the Auburn School Board, who will set these things forth in their plain truths before the people of Auburn in his annual reporter, which will be coming along soon.

Mr. Gardner talked with the Lewiston Journal Tuesday and he was emphatic in his statement that Auburn is at a crisis. Mr. Gardner does not say himself that the building is a “fire-trap” but quotes others and while he says that the principal is level-headed and takes utmost care of the pupils, the building is overcrowded and warnings of experts should be heeded.

A 3-year-old organization formed initially to help workers at the former Decoster Egg Farms in Turner has won the 1999 Seeds of Peace Award given annually by Peace Action Maine.

“We’re honored,” said Maine Rural Workers Coalition office manager Dena Soto. “It gave us the opportunity to be recognized by other organizations that are working toward a common goal.”

Soto’s husband, Jose, is a founder of the coalition.
