A man arrested on suspicion of having murdered a Vermont man turned out to be innocent. He wasn’t the Lewiston man sought. But John Lombard, 25, of Biddeford didn’t get off the hook entirely.

It turned out he was living with a woman so they were both charged with “unlawful cohabitation.” They were alleged to have been living as man and wife at the Wilson Grant farm, at Hillside, where they were employed.

The Lewiston insurance executive who decided to run for governor as an in- dependent, and surprised just about everyone but himself by winning, is going to tell everyone how he did it.

James Bernard Longley, author, is currently collaborating with top aide, former campaign manager, Jim McGregor, on a book dealing with Longley’s campaign and first months as Maine’s governor.

It won’t necessarily be titled “The Making of an Independent Governor,” a title has yet to be selected, but “that’s what the book’s going to be about,” Governor Longley told The Journal recently.

Sarah Lafleur and Katy Champagne began raising money by crawling on the floor. They found dimes and pennies there, dropped by skiers buying hamburgers at the Lost Valley lodge. They were 7 and 8 years old. A quarter was a discovery. And when a man rolled nickels to them on the carpet, they were a treasure.

Collecting money and giving it to someone who needed it was just more fun than other play, Sarah said. They just needed to decide who to give it to.

They both own dogs: Sarah, a Brittany spaniel named Cobi; Katy, a cocker spaniel named Oz. They love them and they had heard of a place that feeds dogs and cats and keeps them warm. They raised $30 from the found money and gave it to the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society.
