GREENWOOD — A proposed “wilderness” campground off of Irish Neighborhood Road in Greenwood will not be developed this year.
Code Enforcement Officer Anne Kwoka presented information about what the owners had planned for the 10,000 square foot site before they decided to pause their plans.
Kwoka said the “wilderness” term meant there would have been little to no amenities. Their application was for 25 campsites or A- frame shelters with one pit toilet for all.
She added that the state requirement to license any campground with five or more sites and the requirement that the owners turn a snowmobiling road into an access road for a fire truck, are some of the reasons why they have withdrawn their proposal.
Kwoka warned the four acre site has the potential to become a homeless community. She said considering Maine’s harsh winters, the town may want to implement a seasonal-only rule and other guidelines for proposed campgrounds. Planning Board Member John Kwoka suggested a May 1- Oct. 31 rule with 24/7 onsite caretaking.
MMA letter
Select board members expressed concern about a statewide citizen petition referendum to freeze the Maine state budget. Chair Amy Chapman, Norm Milliard and Bob Oickle, talked about how that would affect the Town’s budget.
They had received a Maine Municipal Association letter warning them of a potential shut down if the applicants were able to get the required 67,682 signatures from registered Maine voters by June 18.
If the group of six current and former Republican lawmakers led by Rep. Gary Drinkwater, R-Milford, met the deadline, the secretary of state’s office would need to pause implementation of the budget and send the question to voters in November.
“It’s a really big deal to throw a monkey wrench into the budget,” said Chapman. “I haven’t known it to happen on the state level.”
