AUBURN — The Lewiston boys lacrosse team installed a new offense this season under first-year coach Ben Michaud. The transition hasn’t exactly been smooth, but Michaud sees potential in the Blue Devils’ attack.
“We’re just trying to get a lot more motion going, make sure that our off-ball movement is pressed, trying to get that defense turning and confused so we can open up options for everybody,” Michaud said.
Lewiston did exactly that in the first half Tuesday by scoring three times in a 5-4 victory over rival Edward Little. Sophomore Collin Michaud, the coach’s son, led the Blue Devils with three goals.
However, the game also showed why the offense is still a work in progress: the Red Eddies limited the Blue Devils to one goal in the second half.
Despite the slow second half on Tuesday, Ben Michaud has seen improvement during the past week, particularly in the team’s offensive awareness.
“Just better recognition of when they need to move and where and better cuts and better vision on the field as well, seeing their teammates,” Ben Michaud said.
Many of the players understand what Ben Michaud is looking for in the new offense because he coached them in youth lacrosse.
“I’ve had him since fourth grade,” Ben Gradwell, who scored a goal against Edward Little, said. “So I’ve known him for a while. So it’s been good to have him as a coach and he’s made some great plays for us to use in our offense and help elevate us.”
Ben Michaud said he feels the offense will be rounding into form once the postseason begins in June. If the Blue Devils can make it. They are 4-3 on the season and currently fourth in the Class A standings.
Lewiston’s offense received a boost Tuesday with the return of Jackson Bement from injury, and the Blue Devils will be further bolstered when Lucas Bragon heals and rejoins the team. Before his injury, Bement scored a goal and assisted on three others. Another midfielder, Cam Plourde, has seven goals and two assists.
Those midfielders complement what has has been a productive attack. Collin Michaud leads the team with 21 goals and 10 assists, while Nick Beaucage and Gradwell have scored six goals apiece.
“Collin’s a big contributor as a sophomore,” Ben Michaud said. “He’s got great skill out there. We’ve got some solid players with Ben Gradwell and Nick supporting him. It’s a young group, which is good. That means we’ve got a lot of upside ahead of us.”
