“There’ll be no indiscriminate frisking of patrons at tomorrow night’s rock concert at the Central Maine Youth Center in Lewiston, nor will there be any arrests for possession of liquor, or drugs, the American Civil Liberties Union has been advised by local police.

“Robert Howe, executive director of the Maine CLU, headquartered in Portland, told The Journal today his office had been informed of the Lewiston Police Department’s plans to frisk persons who show up for tomorrow night’s concert (Journal story earlier this week) and to refuse admission to those who won’t let themselves be searched.

“Howe reported that in a conversation with Lewiston Police Chief Lucien Longtin, the CLU official was informed that officers at the Youth Center will be checking out only those persons who appear to be hiding something, a jacket bulge, etc. When there’s an obvious bulge in a jacket or coat, or other indication, there will probably be a search, Howe was told.

“He was further informed that a concert goer who is discovered with liquor on his or her person will be given the opportunity to return it to his or her car. If drugs are found on someone, the drugs will be confiscated and destroyed.”

“LISBON — Tony Jenkins spent most of Monday in Lisbon. He was in Lisbon last week and will be in Lisbon twice next week, without having been in the same town twice. That’s because Jenkins, North America bureau chief for Expresso magazine of Portugal, is writing about the many Lisbons of America.

“Last week, he was in New Lisbon, Wis., and he will be visiting North Dakota and Ohio next week, with possible visits to Lisbons in New York and Maryland.

‘”My editors thought it would be a good idea to visit as many Lisbons as possible in America to present them to the people of Lisbon, Portugal,’ said Jenkins, an Englishman living in New York. . . .

“What he and photographer Andrea Motta found in Lisbon, Maine, is that ‘people are pretty content. The town clearly is not suffering economically, and it seems the bad old years of the last recession are now a distant memory,’ Jenkins said.”
