AUBURN — The playoffs were already off the table, but Lewiston’s eight seniors wanted to end their high school baseball careers in style.

Behind a complete-game effort by one of those seniors, Spencer Chartier, the Blue Devils defeated archrival Edward Little 6-0 at Central Maine Community College. Lewiston finishes the season 8-8 and with shutouts in its final two games (the Blue Devils blanked Brunswick 2-0 on Monday).

“It was great, the last couple of games, we have finally come together as a team,” senior catcher Michael Caron said. “We have played together through Little League. It was a wonderful time.”

Chartier was flirting with the 110-pitch limit with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but coach Matt Bowen allowed him to stay on the mound and get the final out.

“I love these guys like family, and I didn’t want to get taken away from them,” Chartier said. “There was nothing going to take me away.”

How did Lewiston win?

• Lewiston (8-8) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a Jeffrey Randall sacrifice fly, and then Caron beat out the throw to first on an infield single to score a runner.

• Chartier settled into the game in the middle innings and finished with 11 strikeouts while allowing only five hits and one walk.

“I felt my best most of the game,” Chartier said. “I was just trying to compete with the guys who came up to hit. I did whatever I could to get them out.”

• Breccan Albert and TJ Kramarz combined for four of the Red Eddies’ (5-11) hits.

• The Blue Devils loaded the bases in the top of the sixth with three straight walks. Chartier hit a bouncer to third, and the Red Eddies (5-11) tried to get the runner at home, but the throw went to the backstop and two runs came home. A third run came home on a passed ball for a 5-0 lead.

• Michael Caron’s RBI single in the seventh to cap the scoring.

They said it

• “We got our walks, we got on base. They made a couple of errors on the other side, pushed our runners across. So it was the bottom of the order that got us going early, our first hit was from our seventh or eighth hitter, Gage Parent — it was his first hit of the year, so it was good to see that — and then after that, the top (of the lineup) started rolling too.” — Lewiston coach Matt Bowen

• “The game was kind of a microcosm of the season that we just had to play a ball. We had a lot of good things we did today and some things that hurt us and, you know, on the scoreboard, you know, at the end. But, overall, we’ll continue to get better. It’s just we have to tidy up some little things.” — Edward Little coach Dave Jordan
