AUBURN — Police and fire crews responded Wednesday afternoon to a report of a man poised to jump off Longley Bridge, according to an Auburn Police Department Facebook post.

Auburn police and fire personnel located the 36-year-old Lisbon man on the rocks of Great Falls shortly after 12:48 p.m.

The man had taken to social media indicating he intended to jump off Longley Bridge into the Androscoggin River, the post said.

Brookfield Renewables reduced water flow to the falls enough for fire crews to launch a rescue boat.

With Auburn police officers on board, the boat proceeded toward the falls as the man jumped from the rocks into a pool of water and became stuck.

Freeing himself from the rocks, the man continued toward officers who kept in constant communication until they were able to assist him out of the water and place him in protective custody.

The man was transported to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center for a psychological evaluation.

Auburn Police Deputy Chief Tim Cougle said charges “are under consideration pending the evaluation.”
