GRAY — It wasn’t a designed home-run play call, so when Owen Kelvey ran for a 48-yard touchdown on Spruce Mountain’s second play from scrimmage against Gray-New Gloucester, junior quarterback Dylan Jewett knew the Phoenix were bound to have some success Friday night.
Not just with running the ball, but in every stage of the game.
Spruce Mountain (3-1) gained 432 yards, scored on 70% of its drives and forced five turnovers in a 58-24 eight-man Large School win over Gray-New Gloucester (2-2).
“We needed that,” Spruce Mountain coach Devin Roberts said. “Needed that big time. We talked about that all week and how important this win was, especially within our division (eight-man Large School South). We knew Gray was good, and we had to make sure we made a statement on them.”
Gray-New Gloucester started the scoring on its opening drive with a quarterback keeper by Cole Prescott, and continued its passing game success when Prescott found Kody Tracy in the back of the end zone for a 20-yard score on its next series.
Kelvey (15 rushes, 153 yards, 2 TDs; 1 catch, 28 yards) scored on Spruce Mountain’s second drive, giving the visitors a lead (14-12) they wouldn’t relinquish.
On the next two Spruce Mountain drives, Jewett (6 for 7 passing, 126 yards) found Levi Richards wide-open down the seam for 37- and 42-yard touchdowns.
“We knew they were going to crowd the box, just watching them on film,” Roberts said. “That’s what we kind of guessed, and they did, with no safety over the top. … We kept baiting them in, and they took the bait.”
After halftime, Jewett and Richards connected once more at the front left pylon for a 12-yard score, extending the lead to 34-18.
“Levi’s good,” Jewett said. “He’s fast, tall. When we were in tight formation and he just released, he’d be open every time.”
Jewett, Richards, Kelvey and Austin Armandi each had interceptions. Jewett’s third-quarter pick was returned 15 yards for a touchdown that made it 42-18. Jewett also blocked a punt in the fourth quarter.
Prescott completed 18 of 29 passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns, including a 38-yarder to Brody Tracy. Kody Tracy threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Gage Rioux on a fourth-and-16 reverse trick play.
Armandi (4 rushes, 98 yards, 2 TDs) punched in a goal-line touchdown in the fourth quarter and broke off a 65-yard scoring run on his next carry.
“We showed our age,” Gray-New Gloucester coach Mike Caiazzo said. “We have a lot of young guys in the lineup, we have a lot of injuries that we’re trying to overcome, and I think those showed tonight.”
Caiazzo added: “They were more physical than us, just power running. They weren’t doing anything that we didn’t know. But it doesn’t matter if you know or not, you still got to be able to stop them, and we just couldn’t stop them.”
