A Massachusetts man wanted on child assault charges was arrested Tuesday morning in Lewiston, the U.S. Marshals Service said in a news release.

Dominique Bailey, 36, of Peabody, Massachusetts, was wanted on three counts of assault and battery on a family or household member and strangulation or suffocation against a 5-year-old, the release said.

Bailey was wanted on multiple warrants from Massachusetts and Maine, authorities said. When he allegedly assaulted the child, he was on probation in Maine for robbery. He was also charged in Maine with a probation violation.

After the alleged assault, authorities said, Bailey stole the mother of the child’s vehicle, which was found several weeks ago by the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office. With a tip from the Marshals Service in Massachusetts, the Maine Violent Offender Task Force believed Bailey was in Maine staying with associates in Lewiston.

The Marshals Service acquired information that led to a residence and, upon forced entry, arrested Bailey, the release said.

Bailey was being held at the county jail in Auburn awaiting extradition to Massachusetts, a corrections officer said Wednesday. He was charged by the Marshals Service as a fugitive from justice, the release said. More charges from the state of Maine are expected in the coming days.
