We had several dozen people correctly identify the front entrance of the former St. Louis Church at the corner of 3rd and Dunn streets in Auburn. Many noted they went to church, were baptized, or married there. Masses began in the basement in 1902. The cornerstone was laid in 1915, starting the construction of the upper church. The last mass was held in August 2013, when the church closed due to structural issues, and was sold to investors. The four bells were removed and placed in a specially designed clock tower at Anniversary Park near the Bernard Lown Peace Bridge. In a random drawing from all the correct entries, Leon Demers, of Auburn, was picked as the winner of a $25 Hannaford Supermarket gift card.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
