We fooled a lot of people with last Week’s Mystery Photo. The majority of incorrect guesses were for Grant’s Bakery on Sabattus Street in Lewiston. However, we did get a few guesses who were off by only a couple hundred feet, guessing the entrance of a building across the street from the correct address, 46 Lisbon St. Former Lewiston city manager and longtime contributor to the contest, Ed Barrett, sent this with his entry. “So, the trick to this photo is that there are two buildings on Lisbon Street, relatively close to one another, that have GRANTS inlaid in their entryway.  I first thought of 113 Lisbon Street, the current location of Brann & Isaacson and Rinck advertising, but the inlay doesn’t include the apostrophe before the s shown in your photo.  So, the photo is of the entryway to 46 Lisbon Street, the Lewiston Trust and Safe Deposit Company building constructed in 1898 and occupied by that company until 1921 when it became W. Grant’s Clothing. William Grant relocated his store, previously at 54 Lisbon Street, to 46 Lisbon in 1926 and operated there for almost 60 years.  The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 when the interior was renovated and modernized while honoring its historic character in 2016 or so, and received Maine Preservation’s 2017 Honor Award.  BTW, the entryway at 46 Lisbon has the word CLOTHING under GRANT’S.  The photo crops that out. I’m assuming the building at 113 Lisbon must have had some relationship with W.T. Grant (the once-large national retail chain), but I did some searching and could not find anything.  I’d be interested in hearing if someone else knows that history.” In a random drawing from all the correct entries, Carol Morin of Lewiston was picked as the winner of a $25 Hannaford Supermarket gift card.
