Five people were injured Wednesday morning in Minot when a pickup heading toward Auburn hit a tree that had fallen across the road, causing the driver to lose control, cross the center line and collide with an SUV.
All five individuals were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Chief Deputy William Gagne of the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office said.
Police say Sherwood Jordan, 73, of Bethel, was driving a 1989 Ford F-150 pickup truck with Mitzie Naples, the truck’s owner, also of Bethel, as a passenger when it struck the downed tree.
The pickup then collided with a gray 2025 Toyota RAV4, driven by Howie Wu, 16, of Brooklyn, New York, Gagne said.
Jordan was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected from the vehicle.
Wu had a driver’s learner permit and his father, Chun H. Wu, 55, also of Brooklyn, was the licensed driver in the front seat. Another passenger in the backseat was not identified.
All five were taken by ambulances from United Ambulance and Auburn Fire-Rescue to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
Multiple 911 calls made to the Androscoggin County Regional Communications Center at about 8:13 a.m. reported the two-vehicle crash in the 800 block of Center Minot Hill Road in Minot.
Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office deputies were assisted at the scene by Minot Fire-Rescue, the Auburn Fire Department, and United Ambulance Service.
The roadway was closed for two to three hours while emergency personnel cleared the scene and investigated the crash. A county reconstructionist responded the scene to help investigate the crash, which remains under investigation.
