Outlook: The Class B state championship game is a showdown of two teams that prior to last week had only one regional title between them (Cony in 2013). The Rams finally broke through for their first regional title since then after Cony teams with winning records fell short seven straight times from 2017-24, while the Blue Blazes came out of nowhere after seven consecutive losing seasons and a 2-6 campaign just last year to win the South. It’s a matchup of squads that have taken different roads here, the Rams having won nine of their 10 games by 32 points or more, and the Blue Blazes having won four straight one-score games.
Led by one of the top Fitzpatrick Trophy contenders in Morin, Cony has been unstoppable. The Rams’ first-string unit has scored touchdowns on 51 of its 54 drives against Class B opponents, and Cony reached the 500-point mark for the season in the North final victory over Fryeburg Academy. Cony’s offensive line of King Jones, Veilleux, Josh Lajoie, Diesel Cox and Kaiden Jones has allowed just one sack. Defensively, a Cony unit allowing just 9.0 points per game boasts a front seven that includes King Jones, Cox and Austin Bucknam on the line and Veilleux, David Frye and Bryce Watson at linebacker. A Gold Ball would cement this Rams team among the very best in central Maine history.
Westbrook, though, fully intends to cap an improbable run with a state championship. Staples’ scrambling and ability to keep plays alive presents an added dimension for Westbrook’s offense, while Lubin is a dynamic receiver who will be a major challenge for the Cony secondary. Bongomin is one of the state’s best defensive players and is a major disruptive force along with Jones. The Blue Blazes, whose lone loss of the season came in Week 2 against Falmouth, own what might be Class B’s most impressive résumé in terms of wins, with two each over Kennebunk and Marshwood as well as one over Cheverus. If the game becomes a back-and-forth affair, Westbrook’s penchant for prevailing in tight contests could be an edge.
