A student from Regional School Unit 13 died after being hit Friday by a school bus on Broadway at the intersection of Eliza Steele Drive, Rockland police said Saturday.
Rockland police and Rockland Fire and EMS crews responded to the incident about 2:20 p.m. The child, who was taken by a medical helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland, died from their injuries, Rockland police said Saturday in a Facebook post.
According to a news release from RSU 13, the district is “working closely” with local law enforcement and emergency responders as they investigate the incident.
The release also stated that no additional details will be released immediately out of respect for the child and their family, but counseling services are available for students or staff who may need support.
“We ask that our community keep the victim and their family in their thoughts and prayers,” the district wrote.

It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
