The death and wounding of two National Guard members in D.C. is a tragedy. They signed up to serve their country and community. There is no excuse for shooting them.
It is important to look at the president’s reaction to this violent act. As the song in “South Pacific” reminds us: “You’ve got to be taught before it’s too late … to hate all the people your relatives hate.” The president’s reaction to this assault is to teach hate.
When white men commit violence, their actions are treated as isolated. When immigrants or people of color commit crimes, their entire communities are blamed and demonized. This is how prejudice spreads. We must push back — so our children inherit compassion, not hate.
