Cheverus quickly established itself as a team to beat by taking down last year’s Class AA champion South Portland in both teams’ season opener last week. That victory set up the Stags to be the first No. 1 team in this winter’s Varsity Maine girls basketball poll.
Cheverus received seven of nine first-place votes. Second-ranked Mt. Ararat, last year’s Class A champion, garnered one first-place vote, while the other went to No. 8 Windham.
The Varsity Maine girls basketball poll is based on games played before Dec. 9, 2025. The top 10 teams are voted on by the Varsity Maine staff, with first-place votes in parentheses, followed by total points.
