An Auburn man with a history of arson charges was indicted this week on allegations that he set three fires in downtown Lewiston in October 2025.

Johnny D. Briggs, 55, was indicted by the Androscoggin County grand jury on three counts of arson.

The charges stem from a trio of fires set in Lewiston late last year. Briggs is accused of setting a dumpster on fire on Oct. 12 and two more on Oct. 14.

The fires, in the area of lower Lincoln Street, were quickly doused by firefighters. Police said an officer who responded to the fires found Briggs in the area.

A later review of surveillance camera footage confirmed Briggs as the suspect, police said.

By the time he was arrested for the dumpster fires, Briggs was already well known to police and fire crews.

In 2023, Briggs was charged in connection with three fires in Auburn where trash cans and dumpsters were set ablaze in the area of Main Street.

Briggs was arrested and charged with three counts of arson and a count of aggravated criminal mischief. He later pleaded guilty to a single count of arson and a charge of aggravated criminal mischief.

In January 2024, Briggs was charged with another trio of fires in Auburn, including one at Dunkin’ on Riverside Drive and another at The Knight House, a historical building at West Pitch Park.

Those charges are pending.

On Thursday, Briggs remained in custody at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn. A dispositional conference is scheduled for Jan. 20, where prosecutors will discuss the case with Briggs’ attorney.
