Fraud, corruption and political favoritism. This doesn’t sound like the Lewiston I grew up in.
First comes the misuse of $1.9 million awarded to 29 nonprofit organizations that was supposed to support community recovery needs in the area after the horrific mass shooting over two years ago. Much of that money is still unaccounted for. There’s been no investigation, and no one seems to be talking about this.
One of the nonprofits awarded funds to help with the community is Gateway Community Services. Yes, the very same company currently under federal investigation for fraud allegations. The nonprofit has allegedly overbilled MaineCare by thousands of dollars, according to previous audits conducted. The state has suspended more money flowing in Gateway’s direction but, once again, Gov. Janet Mills has yet to comment on the matter.
Finally, Iman Osman, who is under indictment for felony gun theft charges, is going to serve on the Lewiston City Council. Osman was appointed by Mayor Carl Sheline to the School Committee, even though he falsely claimed a condemned building to be his residency. Osman’s appointment should’ve been illegitimate under the Lewiston Public Schools rules and the city charter.
I deeply love this city and firmly believe that Somali immigrants have enriched our community. The actions of a few individuals shouldn’t define or overshadow the contributions of the many.
That said, stealing from taxpayers is wrong. We deserve leaders with the courage to stand up for what is right and to insist on accountability.
