LEWISTON — An 82-year-old woman struck by a car Thursday afternoon on York Avenue was listed in stable condition at a hospital, police said.

Police said the woman was walking on York Avenue, a short street between Pleasant and Nash streets, when she was struck at about 2 p.m.

The driver who struck the woman initially left the area, police said, but soon came back to the scene where she was questioned about the crash.

By early Thursday night, investigators were still trying to confirm the victim’s identity. Early indications were that she may have been staying at nearby hotel.

Police did not identify the victim or the driver as their investigation continued into Thursday night.
