The cause of a fire that heavily damaged a large house at 20 Webster St. in Lisbon early Tuesday was determined to be accidental, although the exact origin remains under investigation, Lisbon fire Chief Craig Bouchard wrote in a news release.
The homeowners were home at the time and made the initial 911 call, Bouchard said. No injuries were reported. The owners were able to evacuate the home with their pets. The home is not habitable at this time.
Bouchard declined to release the owner’s name at this time.
Firefighters from several towns responded to the fire, which was reported just after 2 a.m. Lisbon communications advised firefighters 2 minutes later that flames were showing through the roof.
Fire departments from Lewiston, Sabattus, Durham, Topsham and Brunswick assisted Lisbon Fire Department at the scene. Freeport Fire Rescue provided mutual aid to the Lisbon Fire Station.
A third alarm was requested because of limited firefighters and those on scene were getting exhausted, Bouchard said.
Firefighters continued to work on the second floor and roof area, bringing the fire under control at about 3:30 a.m., the chief wrote. The effort to make sure the fire was out was extensive due to the construction of the home and advancement of the fire, Bouchard wrote. As part of that effort, crews discovered an extension of the fire on the first floor.
The Office of State Fire Marshal was contacted to investigate the cause of the fire. Lisbon firefighters remained on scene throughout the morning to monitor for hot spots and
assist state fire investigators. Lisbon firefighters cleared the scene at 1:19 p.m.
