Investigators say an electric blanket is the likely cause of a fire that destroyed a trailer on Ferry Road Thursday morning.

Nobody was home, officials said, when flames were reported on the front of the house at 104 Ferry Road at about 10 a.m.

A cat that lived in the home was unaccounted for a day after the blaze.

Lisbon fire crews were assisted by firefighters from five area towns as they battled the flames.

Crews got the flames knocked down within an hour, but the home was considered a total loss due to extensive damage from fire, heat and smoke.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office assisted with an investigation into the cause of the blaze. On Friday, investigators concluded the fire originated on a mattress in one of the bedrooms.

The cause, they said, was likely a malfunction of an electric blanket. The investigation was continuing later Friday.

According to national safety figures, electric blankets are the cause of roughly 500 home fires annually in the U.S.

The majority of those fires involve electric blankets that are 10 years old or older, according to the Electrical Safety Foundation.

The American Red Cross was providing assistance to the homeowner on Friday. The homeowner was not identified.

Assisting Lisbon firefighters at the scene of the blaze were crews from Lewiston, Sabattus, Durham, Topsham and Bowdoin.
