A Brunswick police officer who was charged with assault on Monday has been on administrative leave since December.

The charge for Nathan Day was issued in West Bath District Court on Monday, a spokesperson for the Office of the Maine Attorney General confirmed in an email to the Press Herald.

Details about when and where the alleged assault occurred were not immediately available.

The attorney general’s spokesperson said they were unable to immediately share related court documents on Monday afternoon.

Brunswick Police Chief Scott Stewart said Day was placed on administrative leave on Dec. 19 but that he was unable to comment “on active personnel issues.”

“As police officers, we have a duty to hold ourselves accountable and to high standards,” Stewart said in an email Monday evening. “However, we are still afforded the same due process as everyone else.”
