George A. Ferguson
SABATTUS – It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of George A. Ferguson on April 18, 2026, at his home in Sabattus. He was a devoted husband of 50 years, a father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. His parents George and Anna Ferguson raised him in Lisbon Falls where he became a well known student, athlete, and later teacher and coach.
They say baseball is America’s pastime, but for George, it was so much more than a game, it was a passion that lasted a lifetime. From a very young age he played ball anywhere he and his friends could find. His dedication and love for the game led him to play in leagues from Canada to the Cape. In 1964, George earned a spot on the University of Maine baseball team playing third base and shortstop. In 1968, he was drafted by the Yankees where he played within their minor league system. George was not to be outdone by his father who was inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981. He was inducted into the same prestigious group in 2010.
George always thanked his father for requiring him to get an education before playing ball. It is through this avenue that he was able to find a new passion, teaching. After a short time in the Durham school system, he began working in Lisbon Falls. George found great joy throughout his 37 years of teaching and also through coaching, refereeing, and umpiring.
George loved the friends he made and kept in touch with throughout his childhood, those he met teaching at Sugg Middle School as well as the buddies he made out at Spring Brook Golf Course. He will be remembered for his kindness, his steady presence teaching and coaching, and the love he gave so freely. His legacy lives on in the family he nurtured and the values he instilled-loyalty, humility, and the importance of showing up for the people who matter most.
He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Ferguson; son, Adam and his wife Gillian, and his daughter, Allyson and her husband Adam Collins; his four grandchildren, Addison and Chase Collins and Landon and Xander Ferguson; his sister, Nancy and her husband Roger Fournier; nephew, Jeff Fournier and his wife Pam and nephew, Andrew Fournier.
A life well lived, a man deeply loved, and a presence that will be profoundly missed.
Funeral services will be held at Holy Family Church in Lewiston on April 29 at 11 a.m.
