Duanne Joyce (Proctor) Smith

LEWISTON – Duanne Joyce (Proctor) Smith, 83, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2021. She was born in Lisbon Falls on May 24, 1938, the only child of Dewey A. and Theresa A. (Baumer) Proctor. Duanne was raised in her childhood home on Main Street in Lisbon Falls. She graduated from Lisbon High School in 1956 and continued her education at the Central Maine General Hospital School of Nursing. She received her Nursing degree in 1959. In 1958 she married Winston L. Smith. Together they raised their three children in Lisbon. Duanne worked as a Registered Nurse her entire career, starting out with Dr. Mendes in Lisbon Falls. She then worked at the Lamp Nursing home, before finishing her career as a school nurse at the Lisbon Elementary School.

Duanne and her husband enjoyed many years of retirement together. Every March they looked forward to visiting their favorite place, Marco Island, Florida. For many years they rented a condo at the South Seas Towers in Marco that overlooked the Gulf of Mexico. On their trip down each year, they made many special stops to spend cherished time with family and friends. Over the years they visited several other areas of the country. Some of the more memorable trips were Hawaii, New Mexico, and many of the National Parks in the western part of the country. They also had a beautiful camp in Rangeley in which many wonderful family memories were made enjoying activities such as boating, hiking, snowmobiling, hunting, and just relaxing.

Duanne enjoyed being actively involved in her church functions, volunteering at the food pantry, helping at bean suppers, and donating to the crafts fairs. Being involved with the community was important to her and among many other things, she enjoyed helping with the town flower gardens and Lisbon Youth Baseball.

Duanne was a great cook and had many favorite recipes that have been passed down to her family. Some of her specialties included seafood casserole, pasta pot, Texas sheet cake, tollhouse cookies, whoopie pies, needhams, and numerous others that everyone loved.

These recipes will be used for generations to come. Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas family dinners were always something to look forward to. One of her favorite family gatherings was a seafood cookout that she held every August.

Duanne was a kind, caring and giving person. She always wanted to help others and make everyone’s life more pleasant and happy, never expecting anything in return. She loved her family dearly, and nothing was more important to her than her husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She loved and cherished every moment and event spent with her family. Making those around her feel special and loved was just one of the many wonderful traits that we admired in her. She never let family leave without telling them she loved them. Duanne was a very special person and will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Duanne was predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Winston of Lisbon, her three children, Norm and wife Cindy of Durham, Lynne (Dobransky) and husband Jerry of Lewiston, and Ryan and wife Tanya of Auburn.
