LEWISTON — Maine Special Olympics held its regional aquatics meet at the YWCA of Central Maine on Friday, March 18, with 85 athletes competing.

The YWCA of Central Maine provides the only public, handicap-accessible pool in the Androscoggin County area and is host to several community organizations utilizing the pool to train aquatic athletes of all abilities throughout the year. Auburn Special Ed, Life Center, Margaret Murphy Center, RSU 16, and Navigators, a community support program of John Murphy Homes, all participate in the aquatics programming at the YWCA.

This year, Maine will send three Special Olympians to Greece to compete in the Special Olympic World Games. Local swimmer, Megan Dyer, of the Navigators, will be one of the athletes traveling to Greece and will prepare for the World Games in a spring training session in San Diego, Calif., next week.

“Special Olympics have allowed Navigators to do some amazing things,” said Michelle Roy of John Murphy Homes.

The Special Olympics State meet will be held at Bates College on Wednesday, April 13.
