MEXICO — The Police Department learned Tuesday its has received a $4,000 grant to do extra patrols on all-terrain vehicle trails.
Sgt. Roy Hodsdon said the money from the Maine Warden Service will also provide funds to teach ATV safety courses. That course will be offered in mid-April.
Hodsdon said the department has received similar grants the past few years. The department plans to apply for a second ATV patrol grant to pay for patrols in the fall.
The Police Department has two ATVs paid for with grants, including the Outdoor Heritage Fund. The Police Explorers also have one donated by the James Eaton family.
Hodsdon said motorists should continue to be on the lookout for deer on the sides of roads. He said within the past two weeks, the Maine Department of Transportation has been called to remove four deer carcasses on River Road near Naples Packing Co. He said the deer were likely killed by tractor-trailers.
The department has also responded to a number of calls for car-deer accidents.
In other matters, Hodsdon said another scam has been identified in the Mexico area. He said a Main Street resident reported Monday that he received a response to an advertisement he placed in a local newspaper for about $800 in various items.
Hodsdon said someone from New York City sent the Main Street resident a check for $4,499, instructing him to take a portion of it, then send the rest to the city. The man did not follow the instructions. Hodsdon said phone calls to the number were not answered.
