WILTON — Selectmen unanimously confirmed a new employee and a promotion within the Wilton Police Department on Tuesday night.

Richard Billian has served as detective for the department and has been named sergeant. Billie Martin of Caribou was accepted as a new full-time officer.

Interim police Chief E. Page Reynolds introduced the candidates to the board Tuesday. One position remains unfilled in the normally six-officer department, he said Wednesday. The department includes the chief and patrol sergeant and four full-time officers.

Earlier this year, selectmen agreed to create a sergeant position based on what department members thought would be most helpful in moving forward after Reynolds resigned his lieutenant position in December.

The new position replaces that of a lieutenant and includes more patrolling and less administrative work. He will supervise the officers and provide some patrol time so officers can complete their investigations and lower their caseloads, former Chief Dennis Brown said at the time.

Billian has been approved by the district attorney to cover sexual assault cases, Reynolds told the board.

Martin has served as reserve officer in Aroostook County and has started training for her new full-time position with Wilton, he said.
