PARIS — After 12 years with School Administrative District 17, Assistant Superintendent Patrick Hartnett is heading to the University of Southern Maine, he said Tuesday.

He will become assistant professor of leadership at the School of Education and Human Development.

“I have been working as an adjunct professor for USM for a few years and threw my hat in the ring this summer to be considered,” he wrote in an email Tuesday. “I was offered the job and I will be leaving my position next month.”

Hartnett said he’s enjoyed working the Oxford Hills School District for 22 years, first as a teacher and assistant principal, and then as assistant superintendent for the past 11 years.

“One of the highlights of my career has been to be a teacher and leader in my home district,” he said.

He will continue contributing to the district beyond next month.

“Pat will still work with Oxford Hills,” Superintendent Monica Henson said by phone Tuesday. “He will continue his role with our leadership academy for school administrators. He will also consult for me as we transition roles and policies.”

She cited the value of his institutional knowledge of the district and its schools.

“I am happy that I will still be working with the district’s principals and assistant principals this year and look forward to continuing to facilitate the leadership academy for the district,” Hartnett said.

The district will hire two people to split Hartnett’s duties between a chief financial officer to lead the SAD 17’s business office and a chief operating officer to oversee technology, facilities, athletics and transportation. Henson said she anticipates those salaries will have no impact on this year’s budget.
