100 years ago,1911

Beginning early in May, the leading drug and confectionery stores in Lewiston, with a few exceptions, will go up on the price of ice cream and sodas and college ices to a uniform price of 10 cents. They claim that they have been unable to make any money at the former price. They also say that the raise is partially due to the jump in the price of cream, which will soon come.

50 years ago, 1961

Today is the day that many young ladies will be vying for a championship in the sixth annual baton twirling contest, to be held at the Central Maine Youth Center.

Mrs. Nelson Sedgely of Auburn will be the hostess. Her daughter, Mrs. Fred J. (Marlene) Miller of Dayton, Ohio, originated the Maine championship contests, which have become increasingly popular each year. Last year 500 competed from the East and Canada.

25 years ago, 1986

Breakfast will be offered in two or three Lewiston elementary schools starting next fall.

Following months of study, Lewiston’s School Committee unanimously voted Monday to serve breakfasts on a trial basis.

Five schools — Montello, Multi-Purpose, Martel, Frye and Wallace — are being considered for the pilot program. Jeanne Hood, Lewiston food service director, will choose breakfast sites along with administrators from the schools and Superintendent Robert. V. Connors.
